Boxelder flower

I saw many flowering boxelders at Peebles Island, especially in the grassy area by the riverside.

Red trees in Connecticut

When I went to Connecticut on Saturday, April 16, I saw that the trees across the street were red.  Maybe they are red maples.

Cottonwood flowers

On Saturday, April 16, I found flowers on the cottonwood behind my house.

Blooming of the forsythia

The forsythia bloomed yesterday! I first saw it when I got home, but it was already dark, so I didn't take the picture until this morning.

The red maples are looking good today:

Flowering tree

Until now, I have only seen the silver maples and red maples flowering, but now flowers have come out on another kind of tree!

I am not sure what kind of tree this is.  There are three of them near the JEC Circle, against the building.  They have multiple small trunks (similar in that way to Japanese maple).

Swelling lilac buds

I photographed this lilac in the morning.  I knew it was a lilac because I know the location, I have seen it through the spring and summer. Later that afternoon, I saw a shrub in a less familiar location.  I did not know what it was, but then I realized the buds were the same as the ones I had photographed in the morning, so that one must be a lilac too.

Progress of spring: crabapple and red maple, April 7, 2011

As of April 7, 2011, the crabapples still show last fall's fruit, and do not show much sign of spring.  In another month or so, they will be flowering.

The red maples have opened up a bit more.

Flowering!

The silver maples have flowered into little brown balls, and the red maple buds have opened up a little, but for the most part, the trees are bare an wintry.  Imagine my surprise then when I was walking along Wednesday, March 16, and I saw this:

I came back Thursday, March 17 to take the photo.  As far as I can tell, it's a magnolia.  This one is by the entrance to the Pittsburgh building, facing south.  I have noticed several other magnolia around campus which have not yet flowered, but they are not in such a sunny location.
